Boyan Slat and his team set out with high hopes of cleaning the ocean in 2018. Their effort failed, but they soon went to work on a new solution.

Some activists begin their work well before they even reach high school. In 2013, 12-year-old Melati Wijsen and her 10-year-old sister, Isabel, wanted to do something about the plastic garbage choking the towns, roadsides, and beaches of their home—Bali, Indonesia. Every day, residents and visitors dump 5,000 tons of garbage directly into the ocean around the island. The sisters decided to tackle the plastic bag problem. Around the world, people use up to 5 trillion of them a year. “Everybody uses plastic bags. People toss them from cars, put them in bins, and where do they go? Into rice fields, rivers, the ocean,”6 Wijsen said. With the help of student volunteers, she and her sister clean up beaches. They urge shop owners and shoppers to use reusable bags made from cloth and recycled newspaper. Their “Bye, Bye Plastic Bag” campaign has spread across Asia to the U.S. and Mexico. “We have a lot of kids spreading the word now,” Wijsen said. “It’s really cool.”7
